Smile Campaign Post Production Diary

After filming my footage for my advert I had to select pieces of footage from what I shot. I shot multiple videos of the scenes so that I would be able to choose the best shots. To do this I went through all of the shots I filmed for each scene and analyzed them to see which ones would be best. I had to take into account how shaky each shot was- if the shots were blurry and whether or not there were any members of the public in the shot (for the park scene). After I chose which shots would be in my final product I started to edit.

For the first scene I had to edit in a repeating Teams notification sound (as the first scene was the character getting stressed at the amount of notifications they were getting for work) as I did not want to have the original audio from the footage- as there was a lot of background noise. The plan for the advert is to have some calming music in the background throughout the advert anyway- so using the original footage audio with clash with the music.

For the next scene I used a fade to black transition so I could smoothly move from the two scenes. I also added in the calm music after the teams notifications so it was a calming move to the next scene.

After I added the Teams notification sound and the background music, I decided to add a transition between the two sounds- so that it was not just a solid transition from the annoying notification sound to the calming music- the two being contrasted against each other.

After some footage got deleted for the house scenes I had to shoot the scenes again- but this time in the studio as we could not film in the original location. I decided to shoot it on a green screen so that I could use it to show the background of a house front room- but once I added in a picture I found that it made the footage lag- and especially with the camera moving around the actor to look at the laptop screen- the image I had added moved with the green screen and did not look natural- so instead I decided to leave the green screen in the background as if it was a green wall.

I did try and change the color of the background using ultra key- but I found that it also made the footage lag- and it looked choppy and quickly put together- so I decided against it- despite the fact that it looked slightly better than the green.

For each different shot I used the same transitions as the one between the first and second shot- as they would fade into each other smoothly. I experimented with a fade to white transition instead of fade to black- and I liked the fade to white more than the black- so I decided to swap the fade transitions into the white.

I decided to keep the fade to black transition that would take the very last shot into the black screen- as it was smoother.

After the last shot- I included the fade to black transition into a black screen with white text.

I also included transitions from each text screen- otherwise the text would've looked choppy. For the text shots I used a statistic about mental health. I also included the words below- as  the campaign is about doing something that makes you smile- as shown in the advert when the character does many things to make them happy.

Finally- I included the slogan for my advert 'It's Ok to Not be Ok'- and the Mind logo at the end- as Mind is the client for this project.

Throughout the editing process I aimed to experiment with different transitions for the video and the audio- and I also experimented with light and gamma levels- but found out that the light levels in the original recording were better than raising or lowering the gamma.
