Podcast Project Plan and Research
Describe your podcast:
What do you hope to achieve? What is the purpose/function of the work? Is it for entertainment, promotion, information, education etc? What is the structure?
In my podcast I aim to make my audience smile with whatever I talk about in the podcast. I will do this by using the research I did on my audience to see what they do to make them happy and what makes them smile. In my podcast I will talk about these things in hope that the people listening will relate to these things and they will make them smile. The podcast will be a promotion for the mental health charity Mind, whilst also being an informative podcast- informing people of things they could do to make them smile. I believe the podcast will remain unstructured as of now, just to ensure that there is no one reading directly from a script, as that is not what happens in most podcasts, and they run freely and smoothly with no scripted content.
Having produced a pilot episode of a Podcast, what did you learn from this experience? What do you think you did well throughout the pilot, and what needs to improve ahead of the Smile Campaign episode? This should relate to technical elements as well as your contributions to hosting the episode.
Having produced a pilot episode of a podcast, I learnt that using the microphones and using the software are harder then I anticipated. I think the actual podcast was made well in the fact of the story behind the radio drama I helped create, but the editing could use some work- which I will attempt to do in this next podcast. I feel like I need to improve the technical aspects of the podcast, such as the recording and the editing, as in the radio drama I helped create, the vocals needed a lot of editing to make them sound clear and precise.
Having completed your target audience research, who is your target audience, and how do you hope to meet their needs through your podcast?
Understanding audiences and users:
– demographics and their needs
– anticipating their needs
– representation and audience theories
– audience, e.g. viewer, reader, player (single/multi), user, participant.
Having completed research into my target audience, I can say that my audience fit into the demographics of young teenagers that are pursuing further education at college, and seek to go into university at the end of their chosen course. After looking into my audience in detail, I can also safely say that they do not have many things that make them smile, other than listening to music or in some cases reading.
What constraints do you anticipate throughout the project, and how do you hope to overcome these?
Constraints, e.g. commercial context, time, budget, scope, format, platform, technical,
materials and resources
As far as I am aware there are no constraints for the podcast as of now, I don't believe we need a budget, as we will be recording inside the college with college equipment, and there is no travel involved other then the already existing journey to college. There may be a time constraint, but as of now I am not sure how much time we have to record and upload this episode of the podcast- as we will most likely find out later in the stage of pre-production.
What materials/resources are required for the project and why?
For the podcast, microphones will be required to record the voices of the people participating, and editing software (Premier Pro) will also be required so that the episode can be edited before it is uploaded. Other than that I cannot think of any other resources that will be required, other than a room to record the podcast, but that is less of a resource and more of a location.
Please provide two - three examples of your research into other existing podcasts similar to your own, and your analysis of these examples?
What was the purpose of your research? What are your observations? How will this help inform your own practice?
Interpreting meaning, purpose, impact and function in others’ work:
genre conventions, e.g. generic expectations and subversions
visual language and creative forms of communication, e.g.:
formal elements including media, form, perspective, scale
design elements, e.g. balance, alignment, repetition, contrast, space, media and techniques
innovation and developments
audience reception, e.g. uses and gratification.
As I joined the course late, I did not conduct any research on any existing podcasts similar to my own planned podcast- but I will ensure that I will look at other podcasts to see what I should include in my own podcast to ensure it is successful.
